No Sugar Please

A couple weeks ago, Myke and I decided it was time for us to get serious about our bodies. After running the half marathon, we decided it would be the best time to actually make that adjustment. We weren’t sure how to go about it exactly, but we knew that we had to make a huge adjustment. Myke came up with the perfect solution: no sugar.

I was a little nervous about the whole thing. The main reason being I am lactose intolerant and it is very difficult for me to get some type of protein without a little sugar. Also, we were going to be going to a couple parties in the next couple weeks and we were extremely worried about the holidays that sneak up on us every year. We have come up with the following plan for us:

We are controlling not eating sugar in our own way. We are not eating any added or processed sugar. We read every label that we buy and make sure it doesn’t have sugar, or has a little bit. We eat on a strict diet 6/7 days of the week. Sunday being our fun day. I have also personally decided to stop drinking soda. Here are a few of my favorite moments of not eating sugar.

  1. Myke and I were dying to see Fury. We didn’t want to to get the snacks at the theater and we were concerned on what we could eat. After reading some blogs, I came up with a good list: pita bread/hummus, cheese, and salami. We went shopping and packed my purse with our healthier snacks. In the middle of the movie, Myke leans over and whispers, “these snacks are way better than popcorn.” We have been on a hummus kick and I’m not going to lie it has helped with not eating other things. The only thing we didn’t get was water, so we put that on the list for next time.
  2. Last Saturday, I made it another freedom day because we were out celebrating a good friend’s birthday. It was cupcakes and shopping, two of my favorite things. However, after not eating the sugar and fat I usually do during the week, I enjoyed my chocolate marshmallow cupcake from Sprinkles even more. I did not feel sick like I was afraid I would and I felt a whole lot better that I had eaten what I had during the week to make it possible for me to have the delicious slice of heaven.
  3. Last Sunday, we went out to lunch and I got a Sprite. For the rest of the afternoon, my stomach was in so much pain. I drank all the water I could at the party we were attending and didn’t have any more sugary snacks-like the cake and ice cream I wanted to badly. Instead when we got home, my husband gave me some cheese and pita bread and hummus and I felt so much better. For some odd reason I was happy. I was happy that I had discovered that my body had reacted that way to soda. I was happy that I had only taken a break for a few days and my body rejected it the minute I put it back in my body. To answer any questions, no I don’t think I will be drinking soda anymore. Maybe a Dr. Pepper here and there with the fam, but other than that, no soda for me.

I’ll be posting here and there how we are doing with this whole thing. Especially during the holidays. Have a great rest of the day.
