Second Child Syndrome

Has anyone else heard of second child syndrome? This became a running joke in my family growing up. If you are unfamiliar with this joke, it was usually said when I asked why my older sister would get to do something I didn’t or had something that I didn’t have. I should emphasize that it was always said as a joke. This phrase has always stuck with me and now that I have a second child of my own, I’m determined now more than ever to make sure she doesn’t ever experience second child syndrome.

Nobody is perfect and I know that life happens, so I know that this phrase will be mentioned in our household a few times. However, even now, I’m doing my best to avoid second child syndrome with Meghan.

One way I am approaching this is buying Meghan a few of her own books, her own stuff animals, and her own clothes. It seems to be working, except when OJ feels the need to get in on the new toys.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for handing down clothes (saving money for the win!), but I want Meghan to have some of her own little clothes and I’m so glad that I’ve been able to do that for her. Another fun thing I’ve been able to do is dressing her in clothes that Olivia never got to wear. We saved a good chunk of Olivia’s clothes and we actually have a fair amount that she never wore.
